Dental Crowns

One of the most common procedures performed in the dental office is restoration with a dental crown. A crown for your tooth can help fix several problems that would otherwise go untreated or need further, possibly more invasive, treatment. Even though it is common to get a tooth crown, many people do not understand the procedure.

At Hillsborough Smiles, we are experts at applying crowns and know how to make everything as stress-free as possible. Crowns can keep your oral health good and protect the teeth, so don’t be intimidated by getting a molar crown of any kind.

What Are Crowns?

A dental crown is a prosthetic restoration that restores damaged teeth. They are cemented onto any teeth that have been damaged by trauma or decay. They cover the outer part of the tooth, sitting above the gumline and encasing it. A root canal crown may also be used, but these are less common. You can have crowns made of different material, such as porcelain crowns or gold crowns.

Dental crowns fit on top of teeth, protecting the delicate enamel underneath them. Once they’ve been cemented onto the tooth, they keep it held together and act as the new top of the tooth. They are made of strong material that is resilient to pressure and damage. They are just as effective as your natural teeth and must be brushed and flossed as if they were real teeth.

Crown Installation Process

Your Hillsborough Smiles dentist will numb the tooth and the surrounding area. Once you are comfortable, a drill will be used to thin the surface of the tooth on all sides to create room for your crown. Your crown will be designed to fit onto the tooth and installed by your dentist so that it fits properly. It is cemented into place and cured with a special light to bond it to your natural tooth.

Don’t let fear of the unknown stop you from getting a dental crown placed on your tooth to preserve it. You can also find a Hillsborough Smiles dental office in Raritan, Somerville, Bound Brook, Bridgewater, Manville, and Bradley Gardens, NJ for your convenience.
